Church and Christ Figure Vandalized in Madrid
On January 5, 2017, the exterior of the parish of Santa María de Nazaret in Madrid, Spain, was vandalized with graffiti and an figure of Christ was damaged by unknown perpetrators.
Located in the district of Villa de Vallecas, the parish is in a prefabricated building next to which is figure of the crucified Christ. On the exterior walls, the vandals wrote "the only church that illuminates is one that burns" -- in Spanish: “la única iglesia que ilumina es la que arde".
The Archbishop of Madrid expressed his sorrow over this vandalism, which he said destroys true coexistence in society.
