Pro-Life Philosophy Professor Investigated then Fired from Catholic University

Country: Belgium

Date of incident: April 11, 2017

Philosophy professor Stéphane Mercier was fired by the Catholic University of Leuven after a student filed a complaint about an essay Mercier wrote in which he argued that abortion is the murder of an innocent life.

The University issued a statement calling Mercier's position "contrary to the core values of the University" and inappropriate in the context of teaching because the right to abortion is “encoded into Belgian law.” Mercier said that he was given no reason for his dismissal. The university said only that in his class, “the serenity required for teaching was not assured.” The Belgian Catholic bishops’ conference said that the matter was between the teacher and the university. Mercier's position is consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Sources: kath.net and Catholic Culture
