Swedish Labour Court Rules Against Pro-Life Midwife

Country: Sweden

Date of incident: April 12, 2017

The Swedish Labour Court upheld the judgments of the Discrimination Ombudsman and Tribunal Court in the case of Christian midwife, Ellinor Grimmark, who has been denied jobs at several clinics due to her refusal to carry out abortions and her outspoken stance on the matter.

The Labour Court ruled that she had not suffered discrimination and that the authorities had not violated her "freedom of opinion and expression." Her legal counsel said that the Labour Court did not examine the right to freedom of conscience and expression according to international law or the European Convention on Human Rights, and will take Grimmark's case to the European Court of Human Rights.
