Cathedral Saint-Jean of Besaçon Vandalized with Anarchist Graffiti

Country: France

Date of incident: June 15, 2017

During the night of June 14-15, 2017 the outer walls of the cathedral were tagged with slogans reading “our lives, our bodies belong to us” and “Down with charity, long live solidarity” (“Nos vies, nos corps nous appartiennent“ and “à bas la charité, vive la solidarité”) . The vandals also painted the anarchistic symbol “A” on front of the door twice.

The rector of the cathedral, Father Bruard, questioned why vandals would attack the building. "We are attacked on subjects like life and charity, it is difficult to understand. All the work of charity has always been placed at the service of men, it is the expression of the love of our brothers. The Church has borne a message in her history that she can be proud of. So why attack our buildings?"

This is the third act of this kind aimed at Christian buildings in Besançon in a few weeks.

Police opened an investigation.
