Ramadan Prayer in front of Virgin Mary Statue

Country: Spain

Date of incident: June 10, 2017

Before breaking their daily Ramadan fast, a prayer was held in the Jardines del Triunfo (Gardens of Triumph) in Granada, Spain. This prayer event was sanctioned by City Hall but caused outrage among some Catholics in the area as the Jardines del Triunfo is the site of a cherished statue of Virgin Mary.

The event was welcomed by Mayor Francisco Cuenca as an act promoting Granada as a "city of co-existence and tolerance," but others objected to the chosen location.

Several politicians took to Twitter to express their outrage, including MP Luis Salvador.

"Mr. Cuenca confuses tolerance and religious respect with provocation. Call for Muslim Prayers at the Virgin of Triumph??" tweeted Salvador, an MP representing Granada.
