Three Acts of Vandalism in Jongieux

Several statues of the Virgin Mary were vandalized in the village of Jongieux between June 8-13, 2017.

The first act of vandalism occurred on during the night of June 8th. Unknown perpetrators broke the statue of the Virgin of Lourdes, located at a crossroads near the cemetery of Jongieux. 

The same night, near the chapel of Saint-Romain, also in Jongieux, another Virgin statue was thrown to the ground and the head was missing from the statue. This stone statue was made by the local vine growers in 1995 is therefore important to the local community.

The third act of vandalism took place on June 13th as yet another statue of the Virgin Mary, this one known as Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Secours, was targeted. This statue was placed in a small oratory with gratings which were torn off. The statue was decapitated and its head was placed at the foot of the oratory.

Police have been informed and are investigating.
