Catholic Historian's Facebook Account Suspended Due to Post about Islam
Facebook suspended the account of Catholic historian Michael Hesemann for 30 days after he published a post commenting on the negative influence of Islam in the history of Europe and, specifically, in Germany.
Facebook notified Hesemann that his post violated its "Community Standards" ("Content posted by you does not conform to our community standards. We remove posts that target individuals based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability").
In an open letter to the social network, Hesemann argued that the suspension violated his right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the German constitution. He went on to explain that his post was in response to an interview in the newspaper Bild in which Interior Minister Horst Seehofer was quoted as saying "Islam is NOT part of Germany," contradicting Chancellor Merkel's statements claiming the opposite. He went on to say that he wrote the commentary as a historian who works at a Catholic university.
Hesemann's post said (translated from German): "Islam plays only one role in the 1700-year history of the Christian West: that of the sword of Damocles, which hung over us; the threat of barbarism, against which it can be united and to ward it off. In that sense, Islam is not part of German history, but the fight against Islam is!" ("Der Islam spielt in der 1700jährigen Geschichte des christlichen Abendlandes immer nur eine Rolle: Die des Damoklesschwertes, das über uns hing, der Bedrohung durch die Barbarei, gegen die es sich zu vereinigen und derer es sich zu erwehren galt. Insofern ist nicht der Islam ein Teil der deutschen Geschichte, sondern der Abwehrkampf gegen den Islam!").

As a doctor of history, who teaches at a Catholic university, I have commented on Seehofer's statement and stated that Islam is only part of the 1700-year history of the European West insofar as Europe was united by the defensive struggle against it. This was the case under Charles Martell (732), it applies to the Crusades (1096-1294), and also applies to the Holy League and the Turkish Wars (16th-17th centuries). Islam with its brutal intimidation tactics: the idea of spreading a religion with a sword was commonly understood as a barbarism in Europe. When you read about Luther's Turkish sermons, it becomes clear how true my statement is. While Islam itself has played no role in German history, in fact until about the 20th century there was not a single mosque community in Germany, the defense against Islam has contributed significantly to European unification and identity. This is an indisputable historical fact, even if you do not consider it "politically correct".
As the grounds of your suspension, you imply that I would attack "persons" because of their religious affiliation. That is explicitly NOT the case. In my criticized statement, it was explicitly about 1700 years of history, not the present day or living persons. The only person to whom it referred indirectly is Horst Seehofer, whom I did not attack but confirmed. Even the Germans can be criticized for barbarism in the years 1933-45 without offending people of the present. Moreover, criticism of a religion whose sacred book contains numerous calls for killing and whose code requires barbaric death and corporal punishment is certainly legitimate, without it attacking the individual, believing Muslim. As a Catholic, I must also hear criticisms of the Crusades and the Old Testament, the Inquisition and the handling of abuse cases by my church, without being personally offended, as the relevant case law clearly states. I would therefore urge you to follow the German Constitution and to refrain from censorship that excludes the author of a sober historical analysis from his social life and any communication with his circle of friends for 30 days.

Als promovierter Historiker, der an einer katholischen Hochschule doziert, habe ich zu Seehofers Aussage Stellung genommen und festgestellt, dass der Islam nur insofern Teil der 1700jährigen Geschichte des europäischen Abendlandes ist, wie sich Europa durch den Abwehrkampf gegen ihn vereinte. Das war unter Karl Martell (732) der Fall, das gilt für die Kreuzzüge (1096-1294), das gilt für die Heilige Liga und die Türkenkriege (16.-17. Jh.). Der Islam mit seinen brutalen Einschüchterungstaktiken, überhaupt die Vorstellung eine Religion mit dem Schwert zu verbreiten, wurde in Europa gemeinhin als Barbarei verstanden. Wenn Sie etwa Luthers Türkenpredigten lesen, wird klar, wie wahr meine Aussage ist: Während der Islam selbst in der deutschen Geschichte keine Rolle gespielt hat, während es etwa bis ins 20. Jahrhundert keine einzige Moscheengemeinde in Deutschland gab, hat der Abwehrkampf gegen den Islam maßgeblich zur europäischen Einigung und Identitätsfindung beigetragen. In der Begründung Ihrer Sperrung unterstellen Sie mir, ich würde "Personen" aufgrund ihrer Religionszugehörigkeit angreifen. Das ist ausdrücklich NICHT der Fall. In meiner beanstandeten Aussage ging es ausdrücklich um 1700 Jahre Geschichte, nicht um die Gegenwart oder lebende Personen. Die einzige Person, um die es indirekt ging, ist Horst Seehofer, den ich nicht angriff, sondern bestätigte. Auch den Deutschen kann man völlig zurecht für die Jahre 1933-45 Barbarei bescheinigen, ohne damit Menschen der Gegenwart zu beleidigen. Im übrigen ist Kritik an einer Religion, deren heiliges Buch zahlreiche Tötungsaufrufe beinhaltet und deren Gesetzbuch barbarische Todes- und Körperstrafen verlangt, gewiss legitim, ohne dass damit der einzelne, gläubige Muslim angegriffen wird. Als Katholik muss ich mir auch Kritik an den Kreuzzügen und am Alten Testament, an der Inquisition und am Umgang meiner Kirche mit Missbrauchsfällen anhören, ohne dadurch persönlich beleidigt zu werden, wie die einschlägige Rechtssprechung eindeutig feststellt. Ich möchte Sie daher dringend bitten, sich weiterhin auf den Boden der deutschen Verfassung zu stellen und eine Zensur zu unterlassen, die den Urheber einer nüchternen historischen Analyse für 30 Tage aus seinem sozialen Leben und jeder Kommunikation mit seinem Freundeskreis ausschließt.
