Christians Assaulted for Protesting Sexually Explicit Ads in the Netherlands

Country: Netherlands

Date of incident: March 11, 2018

Catholic protesters holding a prayer rally were physically harassed, spat on, and assaulted by LGBT activists on March 11th while denouncing retailer Suitsupply's advertising campaign featuring men "groping and kissing" each other.

10 members of Stichting Civitas Christiana (SCC), a Dutch pro-family Catholic group, held a public demonstration in the street in Nijmegen's Keizer Karelplein Square on March 11th to protest Dutch clothing retailer Suitsupply's controversial advertising campaign and in support of traditional family.

The clothing manufacturer posted more than 5,000 billboards and posters in the Netherlands and angered many families due to the sexually explicit images. In the past, the firm used photographs featuring naked or nearly naked women. In this campaign, they have portrayed men in homoerotic poses.

While a spokesman for the SCC communicated the reasons for the protest through a megaphone, counter-demonstrators, many of whom were masked, insulted, spat on, and assaulted the protesters. They destroyed flyers and ripped apart rosaries.

One young man was attacked by a masked woman who put glitter on his head and rubbed it in his eyes. She was led away by police while another woman shouted "hate speech is not free speech" in English. Some reported being groped by other counter-demonstrators. Another counter-demostrator, who had hidden her face with a handkerchief and sunglasses chanted "God is gay" and "Hail Satan."

The founder of SCC and leader of the march Hugo Bos noted the strange contrast "between what they practice and what they preach." Bos also pointed out the irony of attacking others from a different point of view in the name of "tolerance."
