"Free-Thinkers" Take Action Against the Presence of Crosses On Mountaintops

Country: Switzerland

Date of incident: October 24, 2010

The "free-thinkers" of Switzerland, the association of people without religious confession (Vereinigung der Konfessionslosen), are campaigning for a ban of religious symbols not only in public institutions, but also all mountain should be cleared of them.

“We want to prevent that new crosses will be erected,” as Reta Caspar, the business manager of the "free-thinkers" of Switzerland told the news outlet „Zentralschweiz am Sonntag.”  They see a possibility of enforcing this through refusals of building permits. Also the replacement of crosses should be affected.

The "free-thinkers" also support the father in the town of Triengen who demanded that the cross be removed from the room of his childrens’ school.  According to the Federal Judge Giusep Nay, it is not certain whether the federal Court will deliver the same verdict as it decided in 1990. At that time the Court made the decision that a crucifix in the classroom would violate the neutrality of religion. Giusep Nay stated in the news outlet “Zentralschweiz am Sonntag”, “ I am of the opinion that symbols of the religion of the majority of the population should have a place in the public sphere and should be accepted by those of other religions and by non-believers.”
