Statue of Jesus Damaged by Vandals in Katowice

Country: Poland

Date of incident: March 17, 2019

Sometime during the night of March 16th to 17th, unknown vandals damaged the crucifix outside the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Koszutka, a district of Katowice (Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa w Koszutce). Reports indicate that stones were likely thrown at the statue of Jesus, breaking the legs and arms.

This incident happened less than a month after four rosary chapels were desecrated in Katowice.

The parish website expressed sorrow about the incident: "The event brings with it pain and bitterness to both parishioners and the religious community in Koszutka. All the more so because this act of vandalism occurred during Lent, during which we examine and worship the mystery of the Cross."

Police are investigating.
