Thieves Steal Cross from Altar

Country: Germany

Date of incident: May 4, 2019

Sometime between May 3rd and 4th, the intricately carved wooden cross was stolen from the altar of the Peter-Paul-Kirche in Bad Oldesloe. Pastor Diethelm Schark said to enter the sanctuary to steal the wooden cross broke a major taboo and said he hoped the cross would be found and returned.

Despite recent vandalism and thefts, the Protestant church will remain open and will not install surveillance cameras. The cross is valued at between 3,000 and 5,000 euros, but Pastor Schark said its symbolic value and the carving work donated by a member of the community was inestimable.
