Saint-Florent Hermitage Chapel Vandalized in Oberhaslach

Country: France

Date of incident: November 3, 2019

A chapel was vandalized on Sunday, November 3 in Oberhaslach near Molsheim. A statue of St. Bernadette in the chapel of the hermitage of St. Florent was beheaded and moved. The gendarmes are calling for witnesses.

The statue of St. Bernadette was discovered moved and decapitated when a parishioner entered the chapel of St. Florent's hermitage on Sunday, November 3 at about 3:00 p.m. According to Father Marc D'Hooge, parish priest in Oberhaslach, a commune in the Lower Rhine near Molsheim, everything was normal when he opened the chapel at 9 o'clock. The events would therefore have taken place in broad daylight.

No other deterioration was noted. The statue was not of great value and other statues of historical value were not touched, but Father Marc D'Hooge hopes that this type of act will not be repeated.  He also hopes to see the culprits apprehended.
