Statue of the Mary Removed At School in Malaga

Country: Spain

Date of incident: September 3, 2010

A statue of the Virgin of Fuensanta (local patron) at the Carazony college in Malaga was removed in September at the request of parents. Another group of parents launched a campaign to ask for it to be reinstated.

Parents said that this image is not only a religious symbol, but "part of the tradition and culture of the people." They criticized that the statue was removed "without warning". They also indicated that from the standpoint of religious freedom, Catholics, once again, have seen their rights "violated" when the image, which was at display for many years at the college and  which was restored with funding from the AMPA, was taken away without previous notice.
