Attack on Church in Lesvos

Country: Greece

Date of incident: April 14, 2020

The small church of Agia Aikaterini, which is located on the road leading to the Moria refugee camp in Lesvos, was the target of unknown vandals who caused extensive damage in early April.

According to reports, the vandals threw the crucifix on the floor, removed and damaged the decorated frames of the icons, caused great damage to the iconography painted on the inner wall and the ceiling, but also on the outer surfaces.

After the previous vandalism of the chapel of St. Catherine, church officials secured it with locks, but this did not prevent the most recent incident. Local police were notified of the new vandalism, but reports suggest the perpetrators are unlikely to be identified. Another report claims the damage was caused by migrants from the Moria camp.
