Christian Lawyers Appeal Against the Government's Decision to Ban Religious Processions

Country: Spain

Date of incident: September 8, 2021

The Organisation of Christian Lawyers has appealed to the courts that the ban the Junta de Castilla y León placed on religious processions to contain the spread of the Covid 19, was not just. The ban was imposed in Castilla y León to prevent the festival of the patron saint, which takes place on September 8th, from happening. Christian Lawyers claims that this ban interferes with the fundamental right of religious liberty.

President of Christian Lawyers, Polonia Castellanos explained that the Junta de Castilla y León "has exceeded its functions, since any interference in a fundamental right, in this case religious freedom, needs to be developed by organic law."

He continued: "Other mass events have been allowed, such as demonstrations of trade unions" which, in his opinion, "is a clear discrimination against Catholics," and this is not the first time that the Junta de Castilla y Leon has "lash out against Christians with the excuse of the virus."
