Catholic Church of Christ the King in Gothenburg Vandalised

Country: Sweden

Date of incident: November 13, 2021

The Catholic Church of Christ the King and its chapel were vandalized on November 13. Fr. Tobias Unnerstal, the parish Priest of the Christ the King Church, reported the incident to the police. The members of the parish prayed for those responsible for the vandalistic acts.

The priest reported that someone broke in and trashed the altar, throwing everything on the floor, including the songbooks and the chair on which the priest usually sits. The chapel inside the church was also vandalized, being the place where people commemorate those who died during the year.

The parish priest stated that he believes it was an explosion of anger, "of rage towards us, especially because everything on the altar was knocked down". He further deemed the attack completely disrespectful and wondered if "the culprit knows a lot about Christian symbolism" since the destruction seems concrete and intentional and not a random act of vandalism.

The Swedish police were alerted but said that the church has not received any threats and that some witnesses saw people entering the church, but that there is no certainty about the perpetrators.

In the meanwhile, parish life continues and there are no plans to lock the church gate, explained Fr. Tobias who urged parishioners to go to church during the week to pray as "the risk of further attacks decreases when there are people in the church".
