Communist Banner Hanged From Christ Statue in Murcia

Country: Spain

Date of incident: January 26, 2022

On the 26th of January, the Christ statue located on top of the castle of the Murcia district, in Monteagudo, was found in the morning with a large banner with the faces of Soviet leaders, Stalin and Lenin, decorated with the communist symbol of the hammer and sickle on a red star and with a text stating: "It is very difficult to destroy someone who is not willing to surrender". The banner was removed by the municipal firefighters on the same morning it was found.

The responsibility for this act was claimed by the Marxist-Leninist Party, which it undertook due to the sixth anniversary of the outlawing of the organization. In a statement, they said: "there are events scheduled for said anniversary in different Spanish cities such as Madrid, Valencia or Barcelona. On January 27, 2016, the party was outlawed for a year, 9 people were arrested and the general secretary, Roberto Vaquero, was sent to prison under the FIES regime".
