Church Vandalised in Maubeuge

Country: France

Date of incident: August 26, 2009

The church of the Sacred-Heart of Maubeuge was the target of degradations. A parishioner put an and to the damage when he entered the church at approximately 6:30 p.m., thus putting to flight three young men. The three had left a devotional note to Allah.

Sainted glass windows were broken by launching flower pots at them, prayer books were torn, and the cross on the tabernacle was ripped off and thrown to the ground. “Allah we love you” was written on a prayer book at the back of the church.

Father Drappier, the parish priest reacts: “What is unfortunate is that we try to keep the church opened as much as possible for the inhabitants of the neighborhood. I hope these kinds of events won’t force us to protect the church by keeping it closed.”
