15th-Century Church Defaced with Graffiti

Country: Italy

Date of incident: October 31, 2022

In the city of Loseto, the 15th-century Church of the Santissimo Salvatore was vandalised on the 31st of October, at night. The organisation Retake Bari reported that unknown persons vandalised the church with red spray paint. City councillor Antonio Ciaula said: 'Tomorrow I will personally take action at the competent offices and in the council commissions, to restore the proper decorum to the little church, eliminating a disfigurement that, in addition to defacing the park, painfully marks the hearts and faces of all of us.

The organisation Retake Bari commented: "Imagine that in order to erase a swastika on a painted wall, we at Retake have to: write a project signed by an architect, pay stamp duty, submit a request to the superintendence, show samples, wait 120 days, buy materials'.

"The costs (of restoration) are enormous and only specialised restorers can work on that. What is needed is for families to start talking to children, and for schools to go back to talking about the most basic rules of civilised living. We are unable to find other solutions and it is difficult not to give in to sadness and frustration."
