Vandals destroy Christian symbols during Halloween in Poland

Country: Poland

Date of incident: October 31, 2022

On the night of October 31. to November 1st, a statue of Mary was smashed in the parish of Corpus Christi and St. Mary of Czestochowa in Wierzbice. There was also damage done to the tombstone of a nun. The newspaper reports the statue of the Mother of God was very meaningful for the parishioners. The parish priest, Leszek Bajorski, suspects that youths who were at Halloween parties were responsible for the damage. The case has been reported to the police.

"The statue was destroyed in such a way that it cannot be repaired. And it has great sentimental value for the parish. People used to pray by it regularly. It was brought from Lourdes more than 20 years ago," said the parish priest in an interview. The nun's gravestone was destroyed for the third time in the last month.

Firefighters from the Pustkow Żurawski fire brigade also reported the act of vandalism: "Last night worshipping western Halloween there was a disgraceful act against the parish church located in Wierzbice. A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was destroyed, and tombstones located next to the church were damaged. We condemn such behaviour," they wrote on Facebook.
