Spain: Man arrested after Insulting and Punching Priest

On the 7. November in the city of Granada, a 36-year-old man was arrested for insulting and attacking a priest on the public street during the day. The parish priest, José Gabriel Martín, as waking on the Elvira Street wearing his office clothing and collar, as he was approached by the attacker, who insulted him. The priest entered a bar for refuge, where the attacker followed and punched him in the eye.

The priest, José Gabriel Martín, is consiliary of the Real Federación de Hermandades de Cofradías de Semana Santa de Granada and co-parish priest of San Gil y Santa Ana, and San Pedro y San Pablo.

He was treated for minor injuries. The police officers located the perpetrator, who remained in the cells on the next day.

 

The Real Federación de Hermandades de Cofradías de Semana Santa de Granada expressed their condemnation to the incident via social media. They stressed that "violence has no place in our society and even less in the Christian heart".

The federation quoted the words of José Gabriel Martín, who considered what happened an occasion "to give thanks to God and always praise the Lord and his blessed Mother (...)". They ended the thread with the wish that this "act does not raise hatred among us, but the greatest show of affection, affection and mercy that we have to have according to our faith".
