Metal cross blown up in Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijani troops

Country: Armenia

Date of incident: September 27, 2023

The second tallest metal cross in Europe, a 50-meter cross overlooking Stepanakert, the capital of the ethnic-Armenian Republic of Artsakh, was destroyed during the Azerbaijani military offensive that began on 19 September. This is only one of many attacks on the Christian religion of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, who are suffering an ethnic cleansing from their native land since the Azerbaijani military offensive.

The 50-metre cross was erected in 2017 in memory of the defenders of the Nagorno-Karabakh in the village of Dashushen, located in the mountains surrounding Stepanakert. When it was erected, it was the second-tallest metal cross in Europe.

On 27 September different videos and pictures emerged on social media showing the cross destroyed, probably due to a deliberate explosion or an artillery shell impact.
