Statue of Infant Jesus thrown into Garda Lake

Country: Italy

Date of incident: January 3, 2024

Vandals attacked a Nativity scene in Salò, Italy. The figure of the Infant Jesus from the Nativity Scene of the local fire brigade was thrown into the Garda Lake between the 2nd and 3rd of January. The friends of the Salò fire brigade comment that "the baby Jesus was uprooted from his cradle and thrown into the waters in front of the site designated to house the Nativity." They also reported that the figure of St Joseph was also replaced.

"Every year," the friends of the fire brigade say, "the Salò Volunteer Fire Brigade takes care of maintaining and embellishing their Nativity scene, which is then placed on the lakefront, dedicating it to the entire population of Salò, tourists and holidaymakers who spend their holidays on the lake. This was not the first episode that made us reflect on whether we should continue with our concrete presence, but the decision was made that acts of vandalism like the one tonight will certainly not stop us, because we are used to rolling up our sleeves, sacrificing ourselves and working to carry out our values."

The local firefighters' association also called the incident "a gesture which goes beyond the normal understanding of social discomfort, of intolerance towrad other forms of belief."
