Fire at the Church of Santa Maria di Gesù

Country: Italy

Date of incident: July 25, 2023

The Maredolce Castle and Park Association in Palermo have taken legal action, filing a complaint for arson in response to the fire at the fifteenth-century Santa Maria di Gesù church, while investigations of the origin of the fire are still ongoing. The blaze, which occurred on July 25th, resulted in the partial destruction of the church, including the loss of its Renaissance ceiling, a fifteenth-century wooden sculpture of Mary and Jesus, and several other artworks. Moreover, the body of Saint Benedict the Moor, venerated in the church, disappeared in the flames.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation amidst a series of blazes that plagued Sicily during a period of high temperatures. Coldiretti, an agricultural association, estimates that malicious intent may have fueled at least 60% of the fires, emphasizing the need for vigilance and community support in safeguarding against such acts.

According to the civil protection technician appointed by the Municipality of Palermo to assess the damage caused by the devastating fire, estimating around 18 million euros.

President Domenico Ortolano expressed the association's determination to seek justice and preserve the cultural heritage of the city. The church, home to the relics of Saint Benedict the Moor, is considered a vital part of Palermo's identity.

The destruction of the Santa Maria di Gesù church marks a significant loss to Palermo's cultural heritage, prompting both outrage and solidarity as the community rallies together to rebuild and protect its historic landmarks. The Friars Minor of Sicily have launched a crowdfunding initiative to rebuild the church, urging widespread participation in the restoration efforts.
