Vandalism at St John's Church Alresford

Country: United Kingdom

Date of incident: March 28, 2024

In the night before Maundy Thursday, Easter crosses and the noticeboard of Baptist St John's Church in Alresford were vandalised.

A Hampshire police spokesman said about the ongoing enquiries: “We received a report that some time overnight on March 27 into March 28, damage was caused to the St John the Baptist Church noticeboard, and three Easter crosses were knocked down.”

The Alresford Area Churches expressed their regret on Facebook: "Unfortunately, we have had a serious vandalism event at the church early this morning. Our noticeboard has been destroyed and our three large wooden Easter crosses in the churchyard have been uprooted and toppled over."

Revd. Heather Brearey expressed shock at the incident: “It’s very upsetting and shocking, particularly at Easter. We have felt as if we have been attacked. (...) We have been praying for whoever did this as I suspect they are quite troubled.”
