Pro-abortion activists defame and vandalise church

Country: Spain

Date of incident: September 28, 2023

On 28 September, a group of pro-abortion protesters smeared the walls of Santa Maria del Remei Church in Barcelona with graffiti and placed their protest signs on the windows of the church, with messages such as "trash church, you are the dictatorship". On October 30, another graffiti was smeared at the church wall (see image).

On 28 September, the "sexual and reproductive rights association" (L'Associació de Drets Sexuals i Reproductius) called a march in Barcelona to demonstrate on the occasion of the day for the legalisation of abortion. The last stop of the abortion march was the parish of Santa Maria del Remei, in the district of Les Corts, where they arrived with banners and drums to read their manifesto in front of the church doors. At their departure they left their protest signs and graffiti on the walls.

The parish vicar, Pablo Pich, said that he will not take legal action against these acts of vandalism. "We are not here to enter those wars," he said, regretting not having "strength enough."

This incident is not the first time the church was targeted. Already on March 30, Catholics gathered in front of the parish church of Santa Maria del Remei in Barcelona to prevent the desecration of the church by a group of 30 pro-abortionists. The feminists were protesting against the peaceful prayer call of the 40 Days for Life campaign, to specifically intimidate Christians participating in pro-life prayer meetings.

Prior to that event, the parish priest had made a video encouraging parish members to participate in the 40 Days for Life prayer initiative under the slogan 'Either the flag of Christ or Lucifer'. The pro-abortionists responded with this message on social networks calling for a rally: "In the face of this offensive, we, the residents of Les Corts, say enough is enough. We call you next Thursday, 30th March, at 18:30 in Plaza Concordia. Bring pans and spoons, and your friends. We need to be many and shout loudly that if they touch one of us, they touch us all".
