Repeated Vandalism at Bonn Cathedral

Country: Germany

Date of incident: August 12, 2023

On the night of August 12, Bonn Cathedral Basilica again became the target of vandalism and attempted theft during the night, marking it the fourth incident in eight months.

Unknown perpetrators tore down two Ukrainian flags displayed on the walls next to the main portal of the cathedral and attempted to steal copper pipes from the basilica, thus damaging the building.

The Bonn city deanery and the Münster parish of St. Martin started monitoring the situation closely, with administrative management promptly filing a report following the latest incident.

City Dean Dr. Wolfgang Picken expressed concern about the safety of Bonn's city center, particularly highlighting areas spanning from Hofgarten to Poststrasse, where the incidents occurred.
