Churches in Occupied Cyprus Plundered

Country: Cyprus

Date of incident: September 1, 2012

Numerous churches in the Turkish occupied area of Cyprus were profaned and turned into storage rooms, museums and mosques.

The Archbishop of the Cyprian Church, Chrysostomos II, reported at a meeting in Rimini, that approximately 120 Christian churches have been profaned. Art treasures of these churches were also confiscated and sold. In a speech the Archbishop explained that Cypriot Christians were made to suffer under restrictions of religious freedom and arising attacks against them. Chrysostomos II expressed his view saying the Turkish government is trying to wipe out Christianity in the part of the island governed by Turkey.
