Vandalism and theft in Syrian Orthodox church

Country: Sweden

Date of incident: November 23, 2023

In the night of November 23, the Syrian Orthodox church in Tensta was burgled and vandalised. The police found break marks on a door and broken windows and that some objects had been stolen. On December 8, a suspect was arrested.

"There is a lot of hate and misinformation. The church is open as usual and we are in the process of replacing the windows that have been destroyed," commented St Mary's Parish in Tensta to media. The parish published on social media: "The Syrian Orthodox Church in Tensta has been the victim of a crime this morning. We do not know much at the moment and what the motive is. We are working with the police and a preliminary investigation is ongoing."

Christian-democrat politician Aday Bethkinne in Botkyrka commented the incidence:"I condemn the disrespectful and cowardly act against the parish of St Mary in Tensta. The government must ensure that the security of churches is strengthened".
