Polish missionaries arrested in Belarus

Country: Belarus

Date of incident: May 8, 2024

On May 8, two Polish missionaries, Fr Andrzej Yukhnievich, OMI and Fr Pawel Lemekh, OMI were detained at the parish church of Our Lady of Fatima, Šumilina in Belarus for expressing their support to Ukraine. They have been sentenced to 15 days and 10 days in prison, for “subversive activity to the detriment of the Belarussian state”.

To quote a member of their congregation, “It was unclear what they were really arrested for.”

Fr. Luis Ignacio Rois Alonso, the Superior General of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, stated that he was “deeply concerned about the news of the imprisonment of two of our brothers in Belarus. I am aware that the entire charismatic family is also praying earnestly for them. If you have the chance to communicate with our brothers, please pass on our warmest greetings and reaffirm our support during these difficult times.”
