Secularists Condemn Churches Involvement in Public Life

Country: France

Date of incident: November 5, 2012

The Grand Society of France (the largest among Masonic organizations in France) declared that "... churches are restricted only to the spiritual sphere, and not to interfere legitimate public debate leading to evolution and progress of civil rights."

On November 5, the Grand Society of France published a following statement: „The definition of human rights depends only on the collective will of men. The Grand Orient of France strongly condemns the statements of the Catholic Church about the bill on the opening civil marriage to all couples that will be presented to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday. Thus, the reference by Cardinal André Vingt-Trois  -  ‚profound changes in our legislation could radically transform how relationships underpin our society’ reflects obscurantist or backward positions in step with the necessary social and political developments of our time. In the name of Secularism, the Grand Orient of France recalled that the churches are restricted only to the spiritual sphere, and not to interfere legitimate public debate leading to evolution and progress of civil rights.“ Sources: http://www.christianophobie.fr/opinion/les-francs-macons-veulent-excommunier-socialement-les-chretiens-de-la-vie-publique http://www.godf.org/index.php/actualite/details/liens/position/nom/Prises-de-position/slug/projet-de-loi-sur-le-mariage-pour-tous
