Acid instead of wine in the chalice
The Sunday mass in the church of Sant'Andrea on 1 December ended in hospital for a priest in the northern Italian community of Zignago - there was acid in the chalice instead of wine. The mass was interrupted and the congregation called the emergency services.
It all happened in a matter of seconds: After receiving Communion from the chalice, the 83-year-old priest immediately felt a burning pain in his stomach, mouth and face. The priest was rushed to the emergency room. Doctors confirmed that he had ingested an irritating chemical substance. The police are now investigating whether the corrosive liquid got into the chalice accidentally or deliberately.
