Desecration of graves with satanic symbols: Ritual motives "not ruled out"

Country: Spain

Date of incident: December 17, 2024

In Seville town of El Viso del Alcor, the desecration of four coffins in the municipal cemetery on December 17 is being investigated. Authorities and specialists do not rule out ritual motivations. In Spain, an increase in attacks on Christian cemeteries is reported for 2024.

The desecration would have consisted of several corpses removed from the niches and the making of pentagrams with the bones of the deceased, according to the cemetery's gravedigger: ''I arrived in the morning and saw four open graves. I was surprised because it is something that has never happened before."

The alleged ritual and even satanic motivation "is open", according to the Civil Guard.

At the end of October, the Observatorio para la Libertad Religiosa y de Conciencia reported an increase in attacks on Christian cemeteries in 2024. According to the Spanish Observatory, as of October 31, the number of Christian cemeteries attacked or desecrated during 2024 totaled 21 cases.

This incident is the third desecration of graves that has been recorded this autumn: In November around twenty niches and ossuaries were opened in the town of Utrera, with practices similar to those carried out this week. The Civil Guard has not confirmed whether there is a connection or not.

Another recent attack occurred at the beginning of September (OIDAC reported), when an individual under the influence of alcohol and drugs destroyed 70 graves in the San Fernando cemetery in Seville.
