Date of incident: January 18, 2025

Two Islamist bomb threats against a church via a Telegram group caused great concern and prompted the immediate deployment of security forces in the city of Palencia.

The city of Palencia experienced moments of alarm following the circulation of two bomb threats in a Telegram group. The messages, sent by two different users, caused great concern and prompted the immediate deployment of security forces.

The first message claimed that a bomb would be placed in a church in Palencia “in the name of Allah”. This message was followed minutes later by an audio file in which another user made a similar threat, “I'm going to bomb throughout today in Palencia in the name of Allah for all infidels Allahu Akbar.”

The National Police and Guardia Civil, alerted by a member of the group, quickly activated anti-terrorist protocol and increased surveillance in the city's churches. The country is on level 4 alert in the Anti-Terrorism Prevention and Protection Plan, which requires an immediate and coordinated response.

Fortunately, the threats did not materialise and no incidents were reported. The Government Subdelegation confirmed that there were no casualties or damage, and investigations are continuing to identify the perpetrators of the threats. The security forces have assured that all necessary preventive mechanisms have been activated and will continue to work to establish the facts.
