Report France 2009: Vandalism Against Churches, Cemeteries and Chapels On Dramatic Increase

Serge Guillen, vice-director of the Governmental Services of Classified Information (les Renseignements Généraux), a department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, notices: the attacks against places of Christian worship or Catholic buildings have increased. He says: «We have systematized their census. In 2008, 275 places of worship were vandalized (146 cemeteries and 129 churches, chapels and shrines). The following year, the figures rose by 42%». In April 2010, the deputy Louis Guédon of Vendée has questioned the Minister of Interior on his measures he intends to take as to «protect these particularly targeted Christian places of worship». He then added at the Assembly that one «can only regret the silence of the media and the institutions surrounding so numerous degradation of Christian sites».
