Several Churches of Different Denominations in Traunreut Vandalised

Country: Germany

Date of incident: June 25, 2025

In Traunreut, a town in Upper Bavaria, four churches from different denominations were vandalised over several days in the month of June. A young married couple admitted to vandalising multiple churches in Bavaria, citing a deep aversion to religious institutions.

As reported on June 25, four churches from different denominations were vandalised in Traunreut over several days in the month of June. At the Catholic and Protestant churches the damage included overturned benches, scattered liturgical items, and wax poured over a statue of Mary. The Romanian Orthodox Church was spared physical damage but received flyers with crude, pseudo-Christian content.

The suspects—a 26-year-old man and his 22-year-old wife—turned themselves in after media coverage intensified public scrutiny. According to police, the couple admitted to the acts and claimed a “fundamental aversion to churches” as their motive. Authorities are investigating the pair for public property damage and trespassing, though the full extent of the destruction remains unclear.
