Anti-Christian Incidents August 2026

A concentration of desecrations involving tabernacles and consecrated hosts in Italy contributed to the highest monthly number of anti-Christian hate crimes recorded by OIDAC Europe so far in 2026, with 48 cases documented in August.

The highest number of incidents was recorded in Italy (16), followed by France (9), Germany (8), Spain (4) and Poland (2).

The most severe incident occurred in Ukraine, where a monk was killed and two others seriously injured in a knife attack at the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Monastery. While the motive remains under investigation, critics have raised concerns about the attack in the context of continuing political and legal pressure on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).

Overall, the 48 recorded incidents comprised 27 cases of vandalism, 12 desecrations, 4 thefts targeting religious objects, 3 arson-related attacks, 1 homicide and 1 case of physical violence.
