Second Arson at Peine Church Within Two Months

Country: Germany

Date of incident: August 27, 2025

A fire was deliberately set near the side entrance of the Church of the Holy Angels in Peine, marking the second such arson attack in two months and also following a cemetery desecration, prompting a state security investigation.

On the night of August 27, 2025, unknown individuals intentionally set a fire near the side entrance of the Catholic Church of the Holy Angels in Peine, Germany. The blaze, discovered around 6:10 a.m. the following morning at Von-Ketteler-Platz, caused minor damage to the door frame.

Police secured evidence at the scene indicating deliberate arson. Given the possibility of a political motive, state security authorities assumed responsibility for the investigation. Witnesses were urged to report any suspicious activity observed near the church prior to the incident. Notably, this marked the second case of arson at the same location within a two-month period.

Update: On September 8, 2025, a man was arrested and confessed to committing the attack. According to the police, evidence suggests the 45-year-old was “in an exceptional personal situation” at the time of the incident.
