Statue of Mary and Jesus Desecrated by Nazi Symbols

Country: France

Date of incident: August 28, 2025

A statue of the Virgin and Child was desecrated with swastikas and Hitler-like features—sparking outrage and calls for accountability in a community shaken by the attack.

On the night of August 27–28, 2025, a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus was vandalized in the town of Machecoul-Saint-Même, located just south of Nantes, France. The attackers defaced the religious monument with black marker drawings of swastikas, a Hitler-style moustache, and other Nazi imagery—including a bangs haircut and armband on the child. Graffiti reading “Give back our money” and “Answer emails” was also scrawled on the base, adding a layer of confusion to the motive.

Mayor Laurent Robin condemned the act as “unacceptable,” stating: “It is unacceptable that swastikas are added to the damage and acts of vandalism that already punctuate, alas, the daily life of our rural municipalities.”

He added, visibly disheartened: “It’s quite discouraging to be confronted with such a level of stupidity.”

The town hall has filed a formal complaint, and the national gendarmerie has launched an investigation. While the statue’s origins remain unclear—it does not appear on the parish’s heritage list—it has long stood near the Rabine sports park and is considered a fixture of the community. The monument has since been covered and will be cleaned after forensic analysis.
