Painting of the Virgin Mary and Child Jesus Defaced with Offensive Graffiti
A painting of the Virgin Mary and Child Jesus in the Hermitage of La Malena was defaced with disturbing graffiti, including satanic symbols and caricatures. A formal complaint has been filed by Abogados Cristianos.
In early September 2025, vandals defaced a painting the Virgin Mary and Child Jesus in the Hermitage of La Malena, located in Arguis, Huesca. The Virgin was marked with a nose piercing, forehead dots, and a devil tattoo, while the Child Jesus was painted black, given a mustache, and adorned with occult symbols.
The Christian legal group Abogados Cristianos filed a formal complaint with the Court of Instruction in Huesca, citing potential violations of Spain’s laws on profanation and damage to historical heritage. The organization stated that such disrespectful acts “not only cause damage to property, but transform objects of religious veneration into irreverent caricatures,” adding that the symbols used “suggest a direct affront to Catholic beliefs.”
Polonia Castellanos, president of the group, warned that “Christianophobia is growing alarmingly in Spain.” The group called for urgent action to halt what it described as “a wave of attacks” on religious sites across the country.
