Vandalism of Catholic Churches in Munich with White Paint Graffiti

Country: Germany

Date of incident: September 29, 2025

In the night between 28 and 29 September 2025, several Catholic church buildings in Munich were vandalised with white paint graffiti, including slogans such as “God is dead”.

The affected sites included the Liebfrauendom, the Theatinerkirche, the Frauenkirche, the Ludwigskirche, the Jesuit Church of St Michael, the Dominikuszentrum, and the parish centre St Gertrud in the Harthof district.

At about 1:30 a.m., a woman was seen damaging the door of the Theatinerkirche and nearby street lamps with white paint. The police subsequently identified and arrested her: a 29-year-old woman from Munich. She was later charged with damaging public property.

Further reports of similar incidents emerged on Monday morning. The woman was taken into temporary custody after white paint was found on her hands and feet. The damage was estimated to cost several thousand euros.

The graffiti included slogans such as “God is dead” and “Church preaches only hate.” The state security service took over the investigation to determine whether all the graffiti was the work of the same individual.
