On the morning of February 20, 2024, members of the Associació de Veïns l’Harmonia del Carme in Reus, Catalonia, discovered that the statue of the Virgin del Carme in a local chapel had been vandalised. According to the association, unknown individuals forcibly opened the chapel, rotated the statue, broke its hands, removed its crown, and left it on a nearby balcony. The group emphasized that theft did not appear to be the motive, stating, “If they had wanted to steal it, they could have done so.” The statue, which holds significant sentimental value for many residents, will require restoration, and the association announced plans to install a lock to prevent further incidents.
