Man Assaulted Nun and Kicked Church Door
A man entered the Saint-Pierre Abbey in Moissac, assaulted a nun, threatened a witness, and kicked the church door. A man who published a video of the incident reported receiving threats.
On a Sunday in Moissac (Tarn-et-Garonne), a man entered the historic Saint-Pierre Abbey, physically assaulted a nun, threatened another individual who was filming the incident, and exited while screaming and forcefully kicking the church door.
The attack was captured on video and widely circulated online by local farmer Pierre-Guillaume Mercadal, who emphasised the abbey’s significance as a 7th-century pilgrimage site. Despite the aggression, the local prosecutor declined to pursue charges, reportedly citing the perpetrator’s mental instability. Mercadal stated that the attacker’s family filed a complaint against him for sharing the video and claimed he received threats afterward.
Moissac’s mayor, Romain Lopez, noted that the individual was listed as a security risk and criticised the state’s failure to protect religious sites, asking, “What if he comes back next time with a knife?”. He also expressed frustration over repeated church-targeted incidents and perceived judicial leniency.
