Desecration of Ostia Church with Human Excrement

Country: Italy

Date of incident: November 25, 2025

Unidentified vandals defiled the Church of San Nicola di Bari in Ostia by leaving human excrement inside the building, including on the altar, leading the Diocese of Rome to announce a Mass of Reparation.

On November 25, 2025, the Church of San Nicola di Bari in Ostia was desecrated when unknown individuals entered the parish and left human excrement in several areas, including the altar. The Vicariate of Rome confirmed the act and described it as “serious and indefensible,” noting that the presence of excrement on the altar worsened the offense because the site is reserved for the Eucharistic celebration. Cardinal Vicar Angelo Reina stated that the incident was “a spiritual act of violence against the faith.”

In response, the Diocese of Rome announced a solemn Mass of Reparation in accordance with canonical norms and invited parishioners, associations, and citizens to attend. Local volunteers began cleaning the church, while authorities opened an investigation to identify those responsible.
