Arson Attack at Fonsorbes Church
Two altar cloths were set on fire inside Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Fonsorbes, Occitania, with straw from the Christmas nativity scene reportedly moved to fuel the flames.
On December 3, 2025, two fires broke out inside the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Fonsorbes, southwest of Toulouse, affecting the main altar and the chapel of the Virgin. Parishioners present reported seeing altar cloths burning, with one witness stating, “A lady was praying and saw that the nappe of the main altar was in flames.” Vicar Pierre Cussonnet confirmed that another cloth was burning in the chapel and noted that straw from the nearby Christmas nativity scene had been moved to the altar, saying, “One can see that the straw of the nativity scene had been taken and placed at the edge of the nappe to ignite it.” No injuries occurred, and parishioners extinguished the flames before firefighters arrived. The church filed a complaint, and gendarmes opened an investigation into what officials suspect were intentional acts of arson.
