Vienna Church Repeatedly Targeted by Graffiti Vandalism
St. Johann Evangelist Church in Vienna was defaced with graffiti on December 30, 2025, including Arabic writing and an Antifa symbol. Police launched an investigation amid political condemnation and reports of repeated targeting of the site.
Authorities reported that unknown perpetrators defaced the exterior of the St. Johann Evangelist Church, also known as the Kepler Church, at Keplerplatz in Vienna-Favoriten by covering its walls with graffiti containing Arabic characters and markings suggesting a Syrian background, according to news reports. Police confirmed that a complaint for criminal property damage had been filed. An Antifa symbol can also be recognised on the pictures of the incident.
The incident prompted public reactions from political figures, with one local politician calling the repeated smearing of the church with Arabic characters unacceptable, while others cited the case as evidence of insufficient police presence in the area. Reports noted that the church had been vandalised in previous years with different slogans, indicating a pattern of targeted acts against the Christian site.
