Theft and Vandalism of Nativity Scene at Mother Church in Augusta

Country: Italy

Date of incident: January 5, 2025

A case of theft and vandalism was reported inside the Mother Church in Augusta, involving damage to a traditional nativity scene.

During the Christmas exhibition “Via dei Presepi,” the nativity scene installed inside Chiesa Madre in Augusta was deliberately targeted by unknown individuals who stole several figurines and damaged the display.

Beyond the theft, the remaining nativity arrangement was intentionally vandalised, with figures overturned, scattered, and placed upside down, and elements of the scene thrown and displaced in a clear act of disrespect toward the religious installation.

The attack caused significant distress within the parish community and the creator of the nativity scene, as several items of symbolic and sentimental value were lost or damaged, and the entire display was left in a desecrated and disorderly state.
