Historic Zamora Church Vandalised
Vandals defaced Zamora’s Church of Santa María la Nueva with slogans accusing the church of being "accomplice" of Franco and anarchist graffiti.
The markings, which read “Franco murderer. Church accomplice” alongside anarchist symbols, were later removed by cleaning crews.
Although the paint was erased, the episode caused damage to the church’s heritage fabric. Locals condemned the act as cowardly and disrespectful to the city’s historical heritage. No arrests or identification of the perpetrators have been reported.
The incident adds to a series of politically charged acts of vandalism targeting religious sites in Spain, often invoking unresolved tensions over the country’s 20th-century history.
