Four Teenagers Arrested Over Alleged Jihadist Plot Against Basilica

Country: Spain

Date of incident: December 15, 2024

Four Moroccan minors were arrested in Elche, Spain, on 19 December 2024 over an alleged jihadist plot to target the historic Basilica of Santa María, local authorities reported.

Spanish National Police officers arrested the four boys, aged between 14 and 17 and of Moroccan origin, after intercepting concerning messages on social media that suggested links to jihadist activity and a possible plan to strike the basilica during its Jubilee Year celebrations. The Basilica of Santa María in Elche, a Baroque landmark and site of significant cultural and religious gatherings, was reportedly a potential focus of the alleged plot.

No physical harm or damage was recorded as a result of the suspected plot, as authorities acted before any attack could take place.

All four suspects were apprehended by the National Police and ordered by the National Court to be held in a juvenile centre in Madrid while the investigation continued.
