Country: Poland

Date of incident: January 14, 2026

Police identified and detained a 41‑year‑old woman who stole a Gospel book from a church in Nowy Tomyśl and later burned it, with residents assisting in her identification.

Police in Nowy Tomyśl investigated the theft of a Gospel book from the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Plac Chopina. The incident occurred in mid‑January, when church CCTV recorded a woman entering the building and removing the liturgical book, which had been valued at about 2,000 złotys. Officers later confirmed that the stolen book had been burned.

Residents of the town provided information that enabled officers from the Criminal Division of the Nowy Tomyśl County Police Headquarters to identify the suspect. She was a 41‑year‑old Ukrainian citizen living in the local county. According to police, the woman explained her actions by referring to “negative feelings towards the book” and stated that she “believed in God in her own way and had no religious prejudices.” Police spokesperson Podkomisarz Barbara Sobieszek said that “personal beliefs or feelings, regardless of their nature, do not justify theft or the destruction of property.”

Officers located the woman’s residence and detained her for questioning. During procedural activities, she admitted to the theft “without emotion and without showing remorse,” according to the police account.
